How People Make DecisionsPeople have a variety of options when it comes to how they make decisions. Individually some approaches are better than others, but the best option is usually a combination of approaches.

Most people will tell you that they gather facts. They analyze the facts. They try to anticipate possible outcomes and then make the decision. They want you to believe that they have used their intellect and given the problem a great deal of thought.

Behavioral economists and other experts will tell you that more often than not, the decision is far more emotional than rational. These decisions are made using the heart, frequently with minimal or no facts. Usually with a blind eye to any other possible outcomes beyond the emotionally driven one.

types of decision-makingRegardless of how complicated the wizards of smart try to make it, there are only two types of decision-making. There are involuntary decisions and there are voluntary decisions.

The involuntary decision is an immediate decision that you react to rather than think about such as when a car pulls out in front of you. In this type of decision, you rely on experience, training and/or instinct. If you are reading this article, then you have experienced this type of decision and have successfully decided under the most intense circumstances.

The voluntary decision is where you have time and options to decide. Generally, people approach these decisions in one of three ways.
