Decision-Making today builds on research showing that decisions fail half of the time. In business, the top casualties of a poor decision-making process are reputation, long-term growth, employee morale, productivity, revenue and profitability. Our goal is to promote more effective, ethical decision making.

Good Judgement is #1

Dr. Jim Anderson talks about the importance of good judgement in his youtube video entitled, #1 Skill for Product Management.” He goes further by breaking this skill into 3 parts.

Exercising good judgement in picking the people to be on your team is the first part. The people on your team will certainly be critical for a leader in any management endeavor, not just product management.

The second part of Jim’s 3 parts is strategy. Again, there is little room for argument that choosing the right strategy in any endeavor is important whether you are focused on product management or any other endeavor. The wrong strategy will wreck any endeavor.

The third, and final part of Jim’s approach to good decisions is handling crisis. This presumes that something is going to go wrong along the way to success and that a cool head will be needed to save the situation.

While there may be problems along the way to success, it is possible also that there will be no problems. consequently, I disagree with this third part of his program and would like to suggest instead that it be replaced with communication. Without good communications, there will be no team and probably a failed strategy. Communications are what make building the team possible and the means to implement the strategy.

Without a doubt, good judgement in choosing the right people and the right strategy are critical, but neither will cause an endeavor to succeed without good communications.
