Decision-Making today builds on research showing that decisions fail half of the time. In business, the top casualties of a poor decision-making process are reputation, long-term growth, employee morale, productivity, revenue and profitability. Our goal is to promote more effective, ethical decision making.

Ask more Questions for Better Decisions

When we are young, we learn by asking questions. As we grow older our base of knowledge expands and sadly, many of us ask fewer questions because we have made assumptions that allow us to short cut the questioning process.

At this point in my life, I am slowly learning that while it may speed up the process to taking action, it doesn’t always provide the best information and in turn the best decisions. All too frequently I find myself coming to conclusions that are based on my answers to my own questions rather than the answers of the person to whom I have been talking. This rush to a conclusion frequently results in outcomes that are less than optimal.

When outcomes are less than optimal, the problem can frequently be traced back to the question. Was it the right question? Did the answer to the question come from me or did it come from the right person to achieve the best outcome? While this rush to judgement is a shortcoming of my own, I can’t help but think that I am not alone in this as we have all been trained to focus on and get to the answer as quickly as possible.

School for me was all about getting the right answers within the allotted time. How much better would my performance in life be if I had spent more time focusing on the questions in my life and making certain that I asked the right questions to the right people in order to get the right options from which to make the best decision?
